June 5th Copperheads Win Again

On Monday night the Smoky Mountain Bears and the Smoky Mountain Copperheads
matched up at Sevier County High School. The Copperheads coming off of a sweep of their
double header Thursday, were looking to continue their hot start to the season. Meanwhile, the
Bears were looking for their first win of the season. Pitching and defense was the story for this
game. After Giving up ten runs in two innings on Thursday, the Bears started this game with
two scoreless innings. They also got their first lead of the year when Cody Hutcherson hit an
infield single to drive in Eric Hart to make the score 1-0 Bears. The Copperheads answered in
the top of the Third when Brent Richey hit a double to drive in two runs making the score 2-1
Copperheads. The Bears were unable to answer in the bottom of the third, but a 1-2-3 inning in
the top of the third set up Christian Nave’s game-tying homerun in the bottom of the fourth.
Neither team would score in the fifth. In the top of the sixth the Copperheads would string
together a couple of hits and a couple of walks to take the lead 4-2. The bears were unable to
answer in the bottom of the sixth and were unable to make a last inning comeback as the
Copperheads take this one 4-2. The Copperheads improve to 3-0 on the season. The Bears fall
to 0-2.
The star of the game was the Copperheads’ Brent Richey. His two-run double would
prove to be crucial to the outcome of the game, along with a single to get the bats going in the
top of the sixth.
The Copperheads (3-0) will face the Eagles (2-0) at Jefferson County High School at 6:00
pm on Tuesday. The Bears (0-2) will face the Cougars (0-3) at Seymour High School at 6:00PM Tomorrow.
