Bears Take Down Copperheads

Monday night the Bears and the Copperheads matched up at Knoxville Catholic High
School. The Bears were looking to hand the Copperheads their first loss of the season while
trying to get their own season back on track. Both teams were held scoreless in the first inning.
In the top of the second inning the Bears got the bats going. Gavan Rupe singled in Logan Hayes
to score the game’s first run. Hal Bishop also scored on the play on a throwing error. Dalton
Cornett followed that up with a single to right that scored Gavan Rupe and Mark Treadway.
Charlie Brown would add another run on a sacrifice fly making the score 5-0 Bears midway
through the second. The Copperheads would fire right back with four runs of their own in the
bottom half of the second. Brent Richey doubled in two runs and would later score on a
throwing error by the catcher. Later in the inning Lane Harris singled in Ryan Roland to make
the score 5-4 Bears. Neither team would score in the third. The Copperheads would add
another run in the bottom of the fourth on a bases loaded walk drawn by Seth Hunt. The Bears
quickly answered in the sixth when Cameron Wilkerson singled in Charlie Brown to take back
the lead 6-5. In the top of the sixth the Bears would tack on another one with Jacob Jennings’
sacrifice fly to score Logan Hayes. In the top of the seventh Juan Landers doubled in Gavan
Rupe before Cameron Wilkerson singled in Landers to extend the lead to 9-5. The deficit would
prove to be too much as the Bears handed the Copperheads their first loss of the season.
Gavan Rupe was the star of the game going 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs. He proved
to be the driving force for the Bears’ offense by getting on base for the guys behind him the
drive him in. The Bears (2-3) faceoff against the Cougars (1-5) at Seymour High School on
Tuesday night. The Copperheads (5-1) faceoff against the Eagles (3-2) at Jefferson County High School.
