ETSU Summer Classic Recap

Nearly three dozen teams converged on Johnson City, TN, for the ETSU Summer Classic.

There was no stopping Phoenix Baseball, which went undefeated on the weekend and capped its unblemished run with an 11-7 victory over RBI Tri-Cities Cubs in the bracket final.

Phoenix was tough for any one opponent to stop. As a team, Phoenix Baseball hit over .400 for the tournament, scoring 40 total runs in its final four contests.

The Cubs also played well, as did Knox Newbalance and BC Athletics. Braden Hickey and Cameron Bryson both demonstrated good poise at the plate for Newbalance throughout the weekend.

Fury Baseball finished with a 1-2 record and failed to reach bracket play, but did feature two of the top individuals in the division: Jerett McAfee and Harley Walker, who stood out both with their pitching and hitting.

This division saved the best for last, as the championship game was a thrilling contest that saw Viper Baseball Club top the JC Braves by a 2-1 margin on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Scott Elgin fired a complete game for Viper Baseball, hitting as fast as 89 mph with his fastball during the contest.

Viper Baseball and the Braves both were undefeated heading into the bracket final. The Braves allowed fewer than 10 runs combined in their five games over the weekend.

Other teams who stood out included ET Diamond Jacks, Lenoir City Oilers, U17 Generals, East TN Elite and RBI Rifleman.

Brandon Garland turned in the best pitching performance of the weekend for SWVA Elite in a 4-2 victory over Diamond Mine. Garland fanned 14 hitters, clocking at 90 mph twice with his fastball.
