OLD HICKORY CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP by John Moorehouse
KINGSPORT/JOHNSON CITY/BRISTOL- The Appy Storm reigned supreme at the Old Hickory Wood Bat Classic. The Storm topped Bluegrass Xpress by an 8-5 margin to win the championship in the 18U division of a tournament that was played across the Tri-Cities in east Tennessee.
The Storm lost their first game in pool play, then won three straight to make the semifinals of bracket play on Sunday.
In 16U play, Phoenix Baseball Black won the crown, edging RBI Tri-Cities by a 9-8 margin.
Washington County Express flexed its muscle at the plate to win the 8U division, scoring 44 total runs in its three bracket wins.
The WV Gamers won championship hardware in the 10U, 12U and 13U divisions. The 10U Gamers scored at least seven runs in all four of their bracket victories. The 12U Gamers won in a game that went official but could not be completed due to rain, although the opposition Diamond Elite put up a tremendous fight. The 13U Gamers went to the if necessary game with Blue Ridge Baseball SC before emerging victorious.
The Crusaders took the hardware in the 9U division, beating the Lightning Cavs in the finals.
Bombsquad reigned supreme in the 11U division, allowing just one run in two games of bracket play.
There was nothing sneaky about Stealth Baseball, which scored 21 total runs in the 14U semifinals and finals en route to the championship.
Kentucky Baseball Club took the 15U title back to the Bluegrass State, racking up 10 runs in the championship game.
